Las Vegas (on film)

I'm still going through pics of our Las Vegas trip (we went last month to see some friends get married) and uploading them to Flickr,. but I did get all my Holga pics scanned and uploaded today.  I took a B&W roll out on the strip one day, and a color roll downtown on a different day.  I'm tickled at how they came out, especially the black and white ones.

100 meters of existence

A 100-meter long photo of people, taken over 21 days.  The more I look at this, the better it gets.  You can see little stories happening between some of the people.  Just awesome.

Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

In Anchorage, Alaska!  My friend Valette, who lives in Anchorage, took these awesome pics of herself dressed as the super secret agent of video game lore.

Valette as Carmen Sandiego

She even got a mention on this Carmen Sandiego fansite.  Whoo, Valette!

(Even when she's not being a super secret agent, she's one of the folks who always inspires me to be a better photographer, and is a cool person besides.)

Andy Warhol, Sonic Youth, and J.G. Ballard, within 100 yds. of my front door.

EDIT: This didn't happen in my neighborhood, it's just parked near my house.

Well, I can't figure out how to make a slideshow of just the pics I've added to this Flickr set today, so here's a slideshow of the pics that are the whole reason I have gotten into photography the way I have:  subdivision photos.

Someday I'd like to make some of these pics, and others like them, into a book.  Of course, with the housing market taking such a nose-dive, these kind of photos may get harder to come by.  And the ones I've taken may become more documentary than artistic to people looking at them.  We do live in interesting times.

If these kinds of pics interest you and you're on Flickr, be sure to join the McMansions photo pool (created by yours truly).

I know it's a couple of days late, but here are almost 50 fantastic photos of the inauguration of Barack Obama, via the always-excellent "Big Picture" feature from the Boston Globe.  Wow.

Time out of mind, originally uploaded by BoringPostcards.

"Son you better be ready for love
On this glory day
This is your chance to believe
What I've got to say

Keep your eyes on the sky
Put a dollar in the kitty
Don't the moon look pretty

Tonight when I chase the dragon
The water may change to cherry wine
And the silver will turn to gold
Time out of mind

I am holding the mystical sphere
It's direct from Lhasa
Where people are rolling in the snow
Far from the world we know

Children we have it right here
It's the light in my eyes
It's perfection and grace
It's the smile on my face

Tonight when I chase the dragon
The water may change to cherry wine
And the silver will turn to gold
Time out of mind"

I spent last weekend in Birmingham, Alabama, visiting a good friend of mine.  We didn't do much sightseeing, but the one thing we DID do was tailor-made for me: we went and climbed around in the old Sloss blast furnaces, a steel mill that was the main reason the city of Birmingham came to exist at all.  It was like being in one of my dreams.

If the slideshow doesn't work for you, here's the photo set on Flickr.

My buddy Jon showed me a great time last weekend, and I'm going to repay him by posting this hilariously goofy photo of us:

Nothing but blue skies do I see

A trick of the skies as seen at work today. The sky over Atlanta was pretty dramatic all day, actually, and I saw a lot of fleeting shots of cool lights and shadows on buildings as I rode the train home, but by the time I reached my destination it was all dark again.

These are fantastic photos.  They range from offbeat to downright heinous, though one (David Crosby's dad's living room) I actually really like.  (The floral chair would have to go, but otherwise...)

"Foreclosures," by Bruce Gilden

This is an incredibly moving photo essay by photographer Bruce Gilden, who talked to people losing their homes in Fort Myers, Florida.  Most of them were poor to begin with.  Some of the images are really haunting...  it's heartbreaking to realize that people are living this way in OUR country.

You can watch it in a larger size here (I recommend doing that).

There's a group on Flickr for people to send a message to our new President-Elect... I've only looked at the first page or so, but so far it's very cool.
